I spoke with a friend last night and during our conversation my friend (who likes to test me a lot) stated, very matter of factly “I don’t care about politics” to which I replied “You better care about politics! Politics cares about you!” and I went into a long rant about how this is the kind of statement or attitude that gets us nowhere in America because really, politics is EVERYTHING. From your local laws and school board to the city council, what kinds of Sheriff/s and judges you may have to the kind of governor and state representation you may have on up to the federal level. Laws with which, because you did not vote or care about politics, change your life whether you participate or not! Laws which can affect cost of living increases or not, for one’s Social Security when one is old, or has some health issue which prohibits one from working to how much is the minimum wage in your area or for the whole country. You get the point.
I’m not saying that the average American should STUDY politics day in and day out for hours. But at least look at the candidates web pages, read what their platforms are (plus the party platforms) make a decision, register to vote and VOTE. That should be the MINIMAL level of participation. I get that it can be boring, contentious and takes up a little of our precious time but if we don’t care … well, some of what has been happening over the last 30 to 50 years (especially the last 16 years) has affected our lives. (The crash of 2008 and the ensuing jobs losses and homes foreclosures was a MASSIVE impact in some parts of the country).
So PLEASE… VOTE!!!!
